An intimate look into the world of three kids with autism, where you get to understand their difficulties as well as celebrate the little victories with them: that’s a summary of the documentary ‘In Our World’. It also takes the help of parents, teachers, therapists, and other people for the non-initiated to grasp the subject better.
Made by renowned filmmaker Shreedhar BS and produced under his banner Shred Creative Lab, it premiered in Goa earlier this year during the 51st International Film Festival of India (IFFI). Over a span of 51 minutes, it takes you through the inner world of the three protagonists with the help of their families.
Shreedhar says that he has ensured not to make the documentary too clinical or preachy. “Instead, I show three kids who have certain behavioural issues and how they are dealing with the situation. They are engaged in activities like swimming, horse-riding, and music. They work harder than their counterparts and celebrate every small achievement,” he said in an interview.
It took five months of research and six months of work to make the film in such a way that it explains autism spectrum disorders (ASD) to the viewers who may not have known much about the condition. “It also helps bust myths and misconceptions about ASD just by showing the daily routines of the kids. Without being preachy, it talks of inclusivity, acceptance, and assimilation,” said Shreedhar.
